This book
is an excellent guide for anyone who is facing the devastation that Alzheimer’s disease can bring to a family, a workplace
or to our community. Harriet Hodgson has thoroughly researched all areas in care
giving, citing important sources of future help and further support. The book
covers the story of Harriet’s mothers decline giving anecdotal information of symptoms, signs and characteristics of
the disease. She tells you what to expect when having a patient live at home. Through her experience she describes the transition
to an assisted living situation and then on to a nursing home, also special care units and the inevitable death. Harriet describes
the caregiver’s anticipatory grief and gives a journal format in the back of the book for the caregiver to list and
identify things that make you feel grief for the patient while they are still living.
Legal issues as to who pays for care and who can deal with the patients legal documentation are identified as well
as contact information if you are unsure how to go about getting a power of attorney. These are just a few of the many issues
Harriet has researched and given a great insight into the needs and demands upon caring for someone with Alzheimer’s
disease. A great book for health care providers as well.
